Colonels come up short at Southern Miss, 63-50

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team was unable to muster enough offense at Southern Miss, as the Colonels dropped their fourth-straight game, 63-50, Friday night in Reed Green Coliseum.

Sophomore Chelsea Cain accounted for a game-high 15 points, all in the second half, and was the lone Colonel to crack double figures in scoring. But the team scored just five points in the opening quarter and never led in the game.

After trailing 29-20 at the half, Nicholls (1-5) came to as close as seven points late in the third quarter. Southern Miss (1-0) answered with an 8-0 run to close out the period and the momentum continued into the fourth as the Lady Eagles led by as much as 20.

Nicholls shot less than 30 percent from the field for the second time this season, connecting on 28.6 percent for the game. Cain finished 4 of 13 from the field while Chyna Allen was 3 of 9, totaling nine points. Each collected a team-high eight rebounds.

USM shot at 48 percent and had a slight edge in rebounding, 39-34.  The Lady Eagles were led by Allie Kennedy with 14 points and Fess Hawkins had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
