Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nicholls notches home-opening victory over Mobile, 81-53

The Nicholls State University women's basketball team frequently turned defense into offense in its home opener against Mobile and the Colonels cruised to an 81-53 win over the Lady Rams Wednesday night in Stopher Gymnasium.

Nicholls (1-1) had 20 steals in the victory and it resulted in a lopsided 31-2 advantage in points-off-turnovers, as well as a 24-0 margin in fastbreak points. Although DoBee Plaisance's squads have been among the best in the Southland Conference in terms of steals during her tenure, it was the first 20-steal game for the Colonels since November of 2017 against Jacksonville.

Junior Anna McKendree led the defensive attack with a game-high five steals, and it resulted in her leading fastbreaks and distributing the ball to her teammates to the tune of 10 assists. She nearly tallied a double-double, finishing with eight points on the night.

Four Colonels cracked double figures in scoring, led by 18 points from sophomore Adrian Mann. Chelsea Cain and Chyna Allen each scored 15, and the trio combined for 10 steals. Bryanna Washington came off the bench for 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

Nicholls only trailed once in the game, which came in the opening minutes, but it wasn't until a 12-0 run midway in the second quarter that gave the Colonels some separation. The Red and Gray went into the break leading 36-26, and following a 22-19 third quarter, exploded in the fourth by outscoring the visitors by 15.

The Colonels held Mobile without a point in the final five minutes while Allen knocked down the only Nicholls' 3-pointers for the night during the stretch. Nicholls ended the game with a 12-0 run as they extended its home-opener winning streak to 10 games.

Mobile was led by Kelsey Pinera with 18 points and Lauren Bodino had 17.
