THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will wrap up 2020 with its final nonconference game of the season, as the Colonels take on Alabama A&M on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Tipoff in Huntsville is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The contest will be the fifth road game out of a total of seven played and concludes a three-game road swing. Nicholls (1-5) is set to play five games at home in January, starting Saturday with the televised Southland opener against Sam Houston State.
The Colonels will be aiming to end a four-game skid as they head into conference play this weekend. Since a win over Mobile on Dec. 2, Nicholls has fell in matchups against South Alabama, Jackson State, Alabama, and Southern Miss.
Sophomore
Chelsea Cain heads the Colonel offense with 12.0 points per game, followed by
Chyna Allen's 11.5 ppg. Cain bounced back from back-to-back single digit scoring efforts with two straight games of reaching double figures. In the 63-50 loss at Southern Miss on Dec. 18, Cain totaled 15 points and eight rebounds, which was just one point shy of matching her career high. Allen had reached double figures in four consecutive games before scoring nine at USM.
Alabama A&M has played just two games this season, winning their opener against Troy and falling to Belmont, which was also on Dec. 18. The Bulldogs had four games canceled this season due to COVID protocol.
The Bulldogs feature a pair of All-SWAC players in Dariauna Lewis (17.5 ppg) and Deshawna Harper (17.0). Lewis is averaging a double-double with 11 rebounds a game while Harper scored a game-high 20 points in the win over Troy, which was ranked No. 11 in the Mid-Major Top 25.
The meeting will be the first between the programs. The Colonels are 16-10 all-time against SWAC members, including this season's loss to Jackson State.
