THIBODAUX, La. -- Due to rising concerns surrounding COVID-19, the Nicholls Track & Field/Cross Country program officially announced the 3rd Annual Colonel 5k will be available as a VIRTUAL ONLY event with participants having a week (7/11 to 7/18) to run and submit a 5k. While the race can be completed from anywhere, participants are invited to use the official Colonel 5k course following normal traffic rules and safety protocols for running/walking around the Nicholls campus.

With the in-person option now unavailable, registration for the Colonel 5k has been extended through July 18th, the final day participants can submit their results. Head track & field/cross country coach Stefanie Slekis remains enthusiastic about the positive impact of the Colonel 5k on the community as well as the financial assistance the race provides her burgeoning programs at Nicholls.

"Although we were hoping to put on an in person portion of the 3rd Annual Colonel 5k, we hope everyone enjoys competing in the virtual race this year and continues to follow state guidelines for social distancing & wearing a mask," Slekis said. "We are so grateful for our two premier donors for making this event possible: Scorpion Subsea & Barrow's Upholstery. The community support for our race & teams this year has been amazing and we appreciate it now more than ever as we navigate the challenges ahead with COVID-19."

All registrations up to and including July 18th will select either a Red or Black race shirt as well as the option to purchase both colors. Additionally, all registrations will now include a homemade reversible red & black facemask made by Polly Slekis. Proceeds raised by the Colonel 5k benefit Nicholls track & field/cross country. Participants are encouraged to share their run/walk on social media with the hashtags #Colonel5k & #Virtual2020.
