NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Late Thursday afternoon, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released the organization's 2019-20 Team Academic Award recipients, selecting the Nicholls State University women's track & field squad to the prestigious honor roll. The Colonels managed to post a cumulative 3.05 GPA, joining 263 other NCAA Division I programs on the recipient list for the first time in program history.
Notably, the Southland Conference put together near complete representation with 12 of the league's 13 programs making the cut on the women's side. For Nicholls, third-year head track & field coach
Stefanie Slekis denoted just how monumental a task this has been for her women's squad and looks forward to continuing that same success into the future.
"I am extremely proud of our women for earning this team academic recognition," Slekis said. "It has been a program goal since I arrived on campus three years ago to have a women's track & field cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. This was truly a team effort, from the student-athletes to the coaching staff that recruited a group of women who take pride in their academics. The time and effort our women put into their classes to make this happen has been tremendous, and none of it could have happened without the support team coordinating tutoring, advising and academic coaching led by
Alicia Jones."
