Colonels look to continue strong play at home Wednesday against Northwestern State

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team has won both of its Southland Conference home games this season and will look to improve to 3-0 as the Colonels host rival Northwestern State at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13 in Stopher Gymnasium.

Nicholls (3-7, 2-1 SLC) has notched wins over Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana in Thibodaux and will have a total of five SLC games at home in January. The Colonels have just two in February before returning home for Senior Day against McNeese in March.

Nicholls' offense has flourished on its home court, averaging 76.5 points on 46.1 percent shooting and 75 percent from the free-throw line. While opponents are putting up over 68 points a game, the Colonel defense is plus-22 in turnovers in the four games.

Sophomore Chelsea Cain continues to be the focal point for the Colonel offense, coming off a 26-point, 12-rebound game in Saturday's win over Southeastern. She has three double-doubles in the last four games and is averaging 19.3 points at home. For the season, she leads the team with 15.9 points and 7.7 rebounds – both ranking in the top 5 of the Southland.

Redshirt sophomore Adrian Mann provided a spark off the bench against SLU, scoring a season-high 19 points. Mann is third on the team in scoring at 7.9 ppg, with Chyna Allen's 10.2 ranking second.

Northwestern State (0-7, 0-2 SLC) is winless so far under first-year head coach Anna Nimz after the Lady Demons dropped their first two conference games against HBU and McNeese. Dating back to last season, NSU has lost its last 12 games.

Northwestern State's season started late due to COVID and had three games canceled altogether. Like the Colonels, the Demons faced a tough nonconference slate which included games against nationally-ranked Baylor and Texas A&M.

Anessa Dussette leads NSU with 10.6 points and 5.9 rebounds. She poured in a career-high 20 points against Mississippi Valley State and was two rebounds shy of double-double.
