Colonels travel to first-place McNeese Wednesday; HBU re-added

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will take on first-place McNeese in Burton Coliseum on Wednesday to begin a stretch on three consecutive road games. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Nicholls (5-8, 4-2 SLC) was set to play its next two away from Stopher Gymnasium but it was announced Tuesday that the Colonels will now play at HBU at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30. The Huskies will then return to Thibodaux on Thursday, Feb. 25 for the second matchup of the series. The teams were scheduled to play last Wednesday at Stopher but the game was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.

With the added contest, the Colonels are slated for five road games out of their next six. Nicholls is still searching for its first victory outside of Lafourche Parish, holding an 0-7 mark this season. In conference, the Red and Gray fell at Lamar and Central Arkansas.

Nicholls had its best showing of the season from behind the 3-point line in Saturday's win over New Orleans, connecting on 9 of 15 for a 60-percent clip. Chelsea Cain is averaging a team-best 16.9 points per game, doing most of her scoring inside and at the free throw line, but even she contributed from long range with one 3-pointer. Anna McKendree was 3-for-4, while Chyna Allen and Adrian Mann both went 2-for-3.

Cain scored 19 points in the win against UNO while McKendree finished with 17, six rebounds and five assists. McKendree is tied with Mann for third on the team in scoring (8.2 ppg) and Allen is second at 9.6.

McNeese has defied expectations so far after being picked to finish 12th in the preseason poll. With the win over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, the Cowgirls improved to 4-0 in the Southland and are just one of three teams in the SLC without a loss. Stephen F. Austin (6-0) has yet to lose and HBU won its only game played before suspending team activities due to COVID.

The Cowgirls will also be affected by COVID in Wednesday's game as head coach Kacie Cryer will miss the next two due to protocols.

On the court, McNeese is led on offense by Kyla Hamilton (9.7 ppg) who is coming off a 25-point game in the win against SLU.
