Colonels seek 2-0 start Wednesday at Lamar

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will aim for its second 2-0 start in the last three seasons, as the Colonels hit the road for a Wednesday night matchup against Lamar University. Tipoff in the Montagne Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Colonels (2-6, 1-0 SLC) began 2021 with a solid win over Sam Houston State, extending their eight-game conference winning streak while ending a five-game drought. Nicholls used a 10-0 run before halftime to take the lead over the Bearkats and went on to earn an 89-82 victory.

Sophomore Chelsea Cain led the way with another career outing, totaling 29 points and 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double. The Prairieville, Louisiana native swept the weekly awards as her 27.5 points, 12.0 rebound average landed her Southland Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Player of the Week.

Cain leads the Colonels for the season in both categories, averaging 15.9 points and 7.0 rebounds. Chyna Allen is second in scoring at 10.1 points per game and fellow newcomer Anna McKendree is third at 8.5 ppg. McKendree also had a career game against the Kats, scoring 17 points while adding five assists and three steals.

Defense played a big role in the win over Sam Houston State as the Colonels scored 25 points off of 29 Bearkat turnovers. Nicholls had a total of 12 steals and several led to breakaway layups. The Red and Gray finished with a 32-7 margin in fastbreak points.

Lamar (1-7, 0-0 SLC) will be making their SLC debut Wednesday after its opener against Abilene Christian was postponed due to COVID protocols. The Cardinals' last contest was a 77-49 loss at Texas on Dec. 29.

LU is led in scoring by Angel Hastings at 10.4 ppg, followed by Jadyn Pimentel's 9.0 per game. Hastings had a pair of solid outings against tough competition, scoring 18 points at Texas A&M and 22 against TCU. Four of the Cards' eight games came against Big XII and SEC programs.
