Nicholls fell at home to both squads a few weeks ago, taking one set against the Islanders (12-9, 8-1 SLC) before battling UIW (8-16, 3-6 SLC) in a thrilling five-setter. The Colonels trail UIW by a half-game for sixth in the standings while AMCC has a game lead over HBU for first place.
While Nicholls has been able to find ways to score points over the last two weeks, the biggest improvement has been the team defense. Through the first five league matches, the Colonels allowed the opposition to hit at an average of .257. In the last three, Nicholls has limited Southeastern (twice) and Northwestern State to sub .170 percentages.
Texas native
Kylie Lockhart has contributed mightily to the turnaround, averaging 6.6 digs per set during that stretch while being perfect in her serve receptions on 67 attempts. At the net,
Aaliyah Burras has totaled 15 blocks and
Katie Jones has nine.
In the last three matches,
Emily Gauthreaux emerged as the go-to attacker, averaging 4.4 kills in the 11 sets.
Lilly Bivens averaged 10.6 assists in the same span, totaling 117 assists.
