NEW ORLEANS, La. - After falling to New Orleans in its conference opener, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team received offensive outbursts by
Emily Gauthreaux and
Aaliyah Burras to take down the Privateers on the road, 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19) on Thursday evening.
Gauthreaux posted a match-high 18 kills in the four-setter and was followed closely by Burras with 15. In addition to hitting .407, Burras accounted for five block in the win including three in the third set. The offense was split by setters
Lilly Bivens and
Brooke Weichbrodt with 23 assists each, and
Kylie Lockhart paced the defense with 18 digs.
The opening set was closely contested and Nicholls finally closed it out with a a pair of kills.
Yani Johnson and
Devon Bright each had a kill to secure the 25-22 win.
Nicholls looked to be on its way to a 2-0 lead before the Privateers rallied for the win in the second set. Leading 20-18, the Colonels were outscored down the stretch, 7-1. UNO took advantage of four consecutive attack errors to even up the match.
A 9-0 run by the Red and Gray was the different in the third. The offense accounted for five kills during the decisive spurt, and Burras had two of the three blocks.
Nicholls used the same formula in the fourth to close it out, scoring the match's final six points. Burras ended the night with a powerful kill off the defender for the game-winner.
Gauthreaux and Lockhart also chipped in with two aces each.

Nicholls wraps up the regular season on Saturday at Northwestern State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
