THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University soccer team makes its first postseason appearance since 2014, as the Colonels take on the No. 2-seeded McNeese Cowgirls for the fourth time in 2021 to open the Southland Conference Tournament in Corpus Christi. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3.
Under first-year head coach
Robert Podeyn, Nicholls (0-17, 0-12 SLC) will play as the No. 7 seed in the postseason. With only seven schools in the league fielding a women's soccer program, all seven members received a bid to the tournament this season.
The Colonels played McNeese (12-4-2, 9-2-1 SLC) once in the spring season and twice this fall, dropping all three matches by the score of 2-0. The Cowgirls carry an eight-match winning streak in the series with a 21-3 goal advantage during the streak. However, the last Nicholls win came in the 2014 tournament when a Spencer Valdespino goal for the Red and Gray pushed the Colonels into the second round with a 1-0 win.
Nicholls is 1-4 all-time in the Southland Tournament and is 1-1 against McNeese. The two teams squared off in 1998 in the Colonels' first-ever appearance, with McNeese winning 4-0.
