MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team received a career-high 21 points by redshirt senior
Bryanna Washington, but the Colonels were unable to end their losing streak as they fell at Memphis, 71-54, Monday afternoon at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The loss was the seventh straight for the Colonels which slipped to 2-9 on the season. Memphis (9-2) improved to 2-0 all-time against Nicholls and remained undefeated at home at 5-0.
Nicholls never led in the game but outscored the Lady Tigers in the third quarter, 19-15, bringing the deficit to five at 46-41. The Colonels used a 7-0 run to close the gap but Memphis countered with the next six points. In the fourth, Memphis held a double-digit lead en route to the victory.
The Red and Gray cut back on their turnovers, finishing with 18 for the game, but shot under 40 percent from the field against the bigger Lady Tigers. Memphis also had a plus-14 advantage in rebounding.
Washington's career day came on 8 of 16 from the field as she surpassed her previous career-high of 19 points. Chyna added 13 points with 11 in the first half, and Chelea Cain finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Memphis was paced by Jamirah Shutes and Makaiya Brooks with 12 points each. Brooks helped spark the Lady Tiger offense in the first half, making all four of her 3-point attempts.
