HAMMOND, La. – Three games. Three wins. The Nicholls State University softball team ended its opening weekend with another victory over South Dakota, taking down the Coyotes, 6-4, in the final game of the Lion Classic.
Nicholls opened the weekend Saturday with wins against North Texas and South Dakota. Although Sunday's win over USD was not in a run-rule fashion like Saturday, the Colonels did just enough to stay perfect on the season at 3-0.
The offense plated a run in each of the first three frames for a 3-1 advantage, then added three more in the fifth.
Melise Gossen and
Caitlin Garcia had RBI singles, while freshman
Ashlyn Reavis tripled in another run.
South Dakota used a bases loaded double by Skylar Arellano in the sixth to pull within two, but
Alexis LaBure went on to close out the game for the victory. LaBure allowed a pair of one-out singles in the seventh before retiring the next two batters.
LaBure earning the win, pitching 5.0 innings of relief and allowed no earned runs on four hits.
Taryn Westbrook started the game, allowing three hits in two innings. Each pitcher struck out two batters.
The offensive totaled nine hits, led by Reavis, Gossen, and
Scout Blades with two each. Reavis also had an RBI single in the third as she finished with five hits and five RBIs for the weekend.
UP NEXT
Nicholls will make its Swanner Field debut on Friday as the Colonels host Southern Miss for a doubleheader. First pitch on Friday, Feb. 19 is scheduled for 4 p.m.
