FIRST FIVE

• The Nicholls State University football team will open up its six-game Southland Conference schedule by taking on Lamar University on Feb. 27 at Manning Field at John L. Guidry Stadium.  The league was supposed to be opening up with two conference games last weekend, including Lamar vs. Northwestern State, but wintry weather conditions caused both games to be postponed. The matchup between Nicholls and LU will be televised on ESPN+ and can be listened to on ESPN Radio New Orleans 100.3 FM.

• Nicholls opened the season on Friday with an 87-3 win over Division II Lincoln University of Missouri. With the Colonels set to have a bye in the first weekend of the season, the program searched far and wide to find an opponent for a nonconference matchup. The Colonels went on to set school records with 13 touchdowns and 87 points, helped by six turnovers and several short fields. Quarterbacks Lindsey Scott Jr. and Kohen Granier each tossed two touchdowns, while eight different Colonels recorded rushing touchdowns.

• As mentioned, Lamar's season was even further delayed after weather conditions in east Texas and north Louisiana led to a postponement of its game against Northwestern State last weekend. The Cardinals went 4-8 overall and 2-7 in the Southland in 2019, leading to a coaching change. LU brought in Blane Morgan to head the program. Morgan spent the previous five seasons as an assistant at San Diego State.

• Saturday's contest between Nicholls and Lamar will be the 12th all-time meeting between the programs, with the Colonels trailing 6-5 in the all-time series despite a current four-game winning streak. The teams played three times before Lamar brought back football in 2011, and the Cards won the first four meetings through the '14 season. However, Nicholls head coach Tim Rebowe has defeated LU all four of his years, including a 30-28 win in Beaumont in his first season. The victory in '15 ended a 17-game road losing streak for the Colonels. The last meeting was a 50-27 win in 2018 and both teams went on to make the FCS playoffs.

•  Coming off two-straight Southland Conference championships, Nicholls begins its quest to become the first three-peat SLC champion since McNeese won three straight from 2001-03. The Colonels were voted as favorites to repeat as champs in the spring season. Nicholls edged Sam Houston by two points (67) in the poll and had one more first-place vote (7). Southeastern Louisiana comes in at third with 48 points, followed by McNeese (45) and the final first-place vote. The rest of the poll included UIW (32), Northwestern State (20) and Lamar (17).

BY THE NUMBERS
8 - Nicholls had a total of eight players find the end zone on the ground in Friday's season-opening victory against Lincoln. Quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. started it off with a rushing TD on the Colonels' first drive and Donnell Adair ended the scoring with the game's longest rush from 39 yards out. Of the eight Colonels to have a rushing TD, only Adair and Julien Gums had one prior to this season.

13 - The Colonels set a new school record with 13 touchdowns in Friday's win. Twelve on the TDs were on offense, with eight rushing and four passing, and one was scored on a fumble recovery return. The previous record was 11, which was set in 1994 against Livingston, which was also when Nicholls set the then-record for points with 77.

50 - The last time Nicholls and Lamar met was in 2018 in Thibodaux where the Colonels won, 50-27. The 50 points scored was the most in the Rebowe era, prior to Friday's win over Lincoln, and was the first 50-point  effort in conference since 2007. Nicholls scored 50-plus twice that season (58 vs. NSU, 52 vs. TXST).

90% - The quarterback duo of Lindsey Scott Jr. and Kohen Granier teamed up to complete 18 of 20 passes, setting a new single-game record for completion percentage. Scott was 12 of 14 for 153 yards and two TDs, while Granier was 6 of 6 for 75 yards and two scores. The previous record did not last long as it was set in the playoff win over North Dakota in 2019 (87.5%).

A WIN OVER LAMAR WOULD...

... extend the Colonels' winning streak in the series to five games.
... even the all-time series at 6-6.
... give Coach Rebowe his 36th career win, which is three behind Sonny Jackson's program record of 39.
... be the first 2-0 start for Nicholls since '07.
... improve Rebowe's record vs. Texas schools to 22-10.
... put the Colonels at 15-15 in Southland home openers.
... improve the Colonels' home record under Coach Rebowe to 22-7.
... be the second February win for the Colonels in school history.
