THIBODAUX, La. – With half of its Southland Conference schedule in the books, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will travel to Sam Houston on Saturday for a rematch against the Bearkats.
Tipoff in Johnson Coliseum is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Nicholls (6-9, 5-3 SLC) notched its first road win in dominating fashion in a 63-43 victory at McNeese but could not carry that momentum into the next game in a nine-point loss at HBU on Saturday. The Colonels never led in Houston as they saw their seven-game winning streak in the series come to an end.
But the Colonels head back to the Lone Star state aiming for a season sweep of Sam Houston (8-5, 4-3 SLC). Nicholls opened the Southland schedule with an 89-82 win against the Bearkats in Thibodaux, fueled by
Chelsea Cain's 29 points and 13 rebounds. The sophomore has since added three more double-doubles and is averaging one in league play at 19.1 points and 10.0 rebounds.
Cain and
Anna McKendree (17 points) each scored in double figures versus Sam Houston, helping the Colonels to a significant 32-7 advantage in fast break points. The 89 points in the victory was a season-high for Nicholls and is one of two 80-point games.
The Bearkats have been playing some of their best basketball of the season, winning four of its last five. On Wednesday at home, Sam Houston blew out HBU, 88-57, behind a game-high 21 points from Amber Leggett, who leads the Southland in scoring at 20.5 points per game.
Although Leggett continues to have an MVP season, Nicholls was able to limit her to seven points in the previous meeting. Courtney Cleveland and Jolicia Williams stepped up with 20 points each but it was not enough in the 89-82 loss. Cleveland is the 'Kats' second-leading scorer at 12.9 points per game.
