THIBODAUX, La. – With a spot secured for a 10
th consecutive postseason appearance, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to solidify its seeding in its home finale against McNeese on Wednesday, March 3. Tipoff in Stopher Gymnasium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Nicholls (9-13) was a great position to make next week's Southland Conference Tournament before the league announced the league would expand the field from eight teams to 10. But with an 8-7 mark in Southland play and only one game remaining, the Colonels officially clinched a spot in postseason tournament.
The Colonels are coming off a 66-59 win over New Orleans, which gave Nicholls a season sweep of the Privateers. The Red and Gray also bested Northwestern State in both matchups this year and split with Southeastern Louisiana. A win over McNeese (6-13, 6-6 SLC0 would secure a third sweep for the Colonels against Louisiana foes. Nicholls earned its first road win of the season earlier against the Cowgirls, 63-43.
In the victory against New Orleans, Nicholls had four players score in double figures for just the third time this season, with one of the games being against McNeese.
Anna McKendree had a team-high 16 points against UNO, followed by
Chelsea Cain (15),
Adrian Mann (12) and
Terris McKay (11). Cain and McKendree are both averaging double figures in scoring this season at 17.1 points and 10.4, respectively.
McNeese played on Monday a dropped a 62-47 contest at Central Arkansas. It marked the third consecutive loss for the Cowgirls, with their last win coming against HBU on Feb. 22.
Divine Tanks and Kyla Hamilton pace the Cowgirl offense at 10.6 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Tanks scored 12 points in the previous matchup against the Colonels, while Hamilton had an off night from the field, going 0-for-12.
