THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team came away with a pair of losses in Friday's doubleheader against UIW, falling 3-2 and 3-0 at Swanner Field.
Nicholls (6-13, 0-8 SLC) and UIW (6-14, 2-6 SLC) will wrap up the series Saturday at 11 a.m.
In the opener, the Colonels let a 2-0 lead slip away late as UIW plated three in the sixth.
Kelsey Miller notched her second base hit of the contest with two down in the seventh, but a groundout ended the game.
Kennedy Hebert had two of the Colonels' six hits and drove in the second run on a single in the third. She also scored in the second inning on a
Melise Gossen single following her triple leadoff triple.
But in the sixth,
Jordan Moon ran into trouble after a pair of leadoff hits. She left the game for
Emily Danehower, who issued a walk to load the bases. Following a strikeout, a wild pitch allowed a runner to score and then Hailey Jackson blasted a shot to dead center for a 2-run double and a 3-2 lead.
Annie Gunter earned the win, striking out six in the complete game.
For the second game, the Colonels had no answer for the pitching by Ashley Trapp, who struck out 12 batters and gave up just two hits in the complete game shutout.
UIW gave her an early cushion to work with, using a double and a triple to take a 1-0 lead in the third. A Colonel error later in the frame pushed the advantage to 2-0.
Miller led off the game for the Colonels with a single, but the second hit did not come until the fifth on a
Emma Holland two-out single. UIW then added an insurance run in the sixth on a double by Teanna Lucio.
In the seventh, Nicholls put together a two-out rally when an error and a walk brought the tying run to bat. However, Trapp notched her final strikeout of the night to secure the win.
Taryn Westbrook had a solid effort despite taking the loss, giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out three.
