Lady Lion pitching stifles Colonels in opener

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team was held to three hits, two by Kelsey Miller with one driving in the lone Colonel run, as Southeastern Louisiana took the series opener, 6-1, on Friday evening at Swanner Field.

Nicholls (8-14, 1-9 SLC) spotted the Lady Lions their first two runs after errors in the second and third innings resulted in an early deficit. SLU (18-13, 8-2 SLC) added one more in the third before using a 2-run homer and a run-scoring double in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom half, SLU starter Heather Zumo left the game after allowing just one hit and Nicholls jumped all over the new pitcher, Ellie DuBois. Ashlyn Reavis led off the frame with a triple and scored on the next at-bat as Miller fired a single right back up the middle off the pitcher's glove. Kennedy Hebert then drew a walk before DuBois settled in to retire the final six batters in order.

Miller broke up Zumo's no-hit bid in the fourth inning with another single up the middle. Zumo struck out six and walked one as she improved to 11-2 on the season.

For the Colonels, Taryn Westbrook (2-2) allowed three earned runs on seven hits and walked three. Emily Danehower tossed 2.1 innings and gave up a pair of hits while striking out two.

SLU totaled nine hits with Lindsey Rizzo and Audrey Greely finishing with two each. Greely homered in the fifth before Aeriyl Mass drove in their final run on a double.
