SLU hands Colonels 76-58 loss

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team had a late scoring drought in the second quarter to fall behind against Southeastern and the Lady Lions went on to defeat the Colonels, 76-58, Saturday afternoon in Stopher Gymnasium.

Nicholls (3-11, 1-2 SLC) and SLU were even at 25 with five minutes to go until halftime, but the rim was unkind to the home squad as the Colonels went scoreless into the break. Southeastern (7-6, 3-0 SLC) used the drought to build a 32-25 halftime lead and never looked back, going on to claim their second straight win over Nicholls for the first time since 2010.

Four Colonels scored in double figures, led by Bryanna Washington with 16 points. Chelsea Cain added 12 points with a 6-for-6 outing at the free throw line, and Kyrstin Green came off the bench to knock down three 3-pointers, totaling 11 points. Chyna Allen rounded out the leading scorers for the Red and Gray with 10 points. Allen played the entire 40 minutes for the short-handed Colonels, while Cain and Washington logged 38 minutes each.

SLU had four players in double figures as well, but three were non-starters to fuel a dominating 57-17 advantage in bench points. Taylor Bell scored a game-high 20 and Morgan Davis 18 points on 6 of 8 from the field.

Following the Colonel drought, Southeastern saw its first double-digit lead at 40-30 midway through the third. Cain answered with a bucket but Bell followed with a layup and the lead stayed in double figures for the rest of the game.

The teams nearly shot identical from field at 46 and 44 percent, but the Lady Lions had a plus-14 margin on the boards.
