BEAUMONT, Texas - After keeping Lamar University off the scoreboard for nearly the entire match, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team fell short of securing a result as the Cardinals scored in the 87th minute to defeat the Colonels, 1-0, Friday afternoon at the LU Soccer Complex.
Behind a strong performance at goalkeeper by
Reagan Carter, Nicholls (2-16-2, 0-12 SLC) was able to withstand a flurry of Lamar shots to the tune of 26 including 11 on goal. Carter racked up double-digit saves for the third consecutive outing but was unable to pick up No. 12 as Laura Lineras got one past her for the lone score of the day.
The goal came just over a minute after the Colonels finally cracked through the Lamar defense with a pair of shots. Playing shorthanded after losing a player with a red card, Nicholls received back-to-back shots by
Jemma Catherwood and
Lillie Mazur following a cornerkick. But Lamar (13-1-2, 10-1-1 SLC) quickly countered as Christine Kitaru found Linares for the game winner.
The Colonels were once again held at a significant disadvantage in shots taken, with LU outshooting Nicholls, 26-2. Cariel Ellis and Christine Kitaru each fired off six shots for the home team.
Nicholls ends the season without a result in conference for the second straight year and third time in the last four seasons. The program is also searching for its first victory in conference since defeating Stephen F. Austin in 2018.
