Colonels Fall to Antelopes

THIBODAUX, La. – Turnovers and scoring droughts led to the Nicholls State University women's basketball team being defeated 79-41 by Grand Canyon University inside Stopher Gym on Friday night.

The Antelopes got out to a hot start, jumping out to a 12-0 advantage that eventually turned into a 27-5 GCU lead after the first quarter.

 After the first, the Colonels handled the defensive pressure better and lost the second, 13-12. The second half saw the Antelopes win the third, 19-9, and the fourth, 20-15.

Overall, GCU won the turnover battle 33-19, the points in the paint battle 38-16, and shot 49.2% from the field compared to 34.7% for Nicholls.

Sophomore forward Deonna Brister has scored double figures in every game this season for the Red & Gray as she finished with a team-high 13 points and six rebounds.

Senior guard Traya Bruce reached double figures for the first time this season finishing with 10 points, including hitting two of the Colonels' five 3-pointers.

Sophomore guard Amelia Sandie hit two 3-pointers and a pull-up jumper to add eight points, while junior guard Kyla Hamilton hit one three and a few layups to score seven points.

GCU had three individuals in double figures. Tiarra Brown was the game's most efficient player finishing with 12 points while shooting 6-6 from the field. Naudia Evans and Dominique Phillips hit 3-pointers and finished with 11 points apiece.
