Colonels Roll in Home Opener against Jarvis Christian, 97-52

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team had three players score in double figures, led by 25 points by Caleb Huffman and 19 from Latrell Jones, as the Colonels picked up a 97-52 victory over Jarvis Christian Tuesday night on Broussard Court at Stopher Gymnasium.

With the win, Nicholls (1-3) notched its first win of the season after three road games out west. The Colonels also improved to 4-1 in home openers under fifth-year head coach Austin Claunch.

Huffman and Jones each finished a rebound shy of a double-double, while Jalen White sank five 3-pointers for 15 points. A total of nine players cracked the scoring column with Pierce Spencer chipping in with nine points, and Marek Nelson and Edoardo Del Cadia tacked on eight each. As a team, the Colonels shot 52.1 percent from the field and canned 13 3-pointers.

Nicholls never trailed in the contest but did not begin to pull away until the end of the first half. White's first 3-pointer gave the Red and Gray a 19-9 advantage and Jarvis Christian hung around to make it a 28-22 game before the eight-minute media timeout. White and Spencer drained back-to-back triple to double the advantage and the Colonels led by as much as 18 before halftime.

Coming out of the break, Nicholls turned up the intensity a notch on defense and did not allow a point through six minutes. The offense scored 12 straight points, highlighted by a pair of dunks before Huffman hit another 3-pointer for a 57-30 lead.

The Colonels went on to outscore Jarvis in the second half, 52-22, for the 45-point victory.

As a team, Nicholls had 22 assists on 38 field goals, paced by Spencer and Micah Thomas with four apiece. Defensively, the Colonels totaled 17 steals off of 26 Bulldog turnovers.

Jorden Clark finished with a team-high 13 points on 5 of 7 from the field for Jarvis Christian.
