Men's Hoops to Host Champion Christian Tuesday Night

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team will play its second home contest of the season, hosting Champion Christian University on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Broussard Court in Stopher Gymnasium.

The game will air on ESPN+ with Casey Gisclair making the call. Tipoff will be around 7 p.m. following the women's 5 p.m. matchup against New Mexico.

Nicholls (2-4) won its home opener last Tuesday before picking up a split this weekend in the Las Vegas Holiday. The Colonels were tied with Friday's opponent, UC Irvine, before a rough second half. The Red and Gray bounced back Saturday with a 72-70 win over San Diego.

The Colonels were led by guard Latrell Jones, who was named Southland Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his Colonel career. Jones scored a personal best 26 points in the victory over San Diego as Nicholls shot a season-high 56.5 percent from the field.

Along with a pair of late free throws by Jones, the Colonels had several players step up down the stretch with key plays. Lance-Amir Paul made a 3-pointer to tie the game with two minutes remaining and Micah Thomas added a go-ahead jumper late. Paul was then able to find Manny Littles open under the basket for the game-winning bucket in the final seconds.

Nicholls has featured a four-guard lineup so far this season, with Jones (13.8), Thomas (13.5) and Caleb Huffman (12.0) each averaging at least 12 points per game. Although the Colonels have struggled in rebounding with a minus-14 margin, the smaller lineup has led to one of the best defenses in the nation in causing turnovers. Nicholls ranks 10th in the NCAA with 20 turnovers forced per game and is fifth in steals at 11.8. Huffman added three more steals over the weekend and now ranks 18th at 2.67 per outing.

Champion Christian, a NCCAA program out of Hot Springs, Arkansas, has played two Southland opponents this season. The Tigers fell at McNeese, 110-54, and at Houston Christian, 119-97.
