THIBODAUX, La. – A slow start in the third quarter was costly for the Nicholls State University women's basketball team who was defeated 72-55 by New Mexico inside Stopher Gym on Tuesday night.
UNM started the second half with a 16-0 run to start the third quarter that saw the Lobos hit 10 of 20 field goals. This came after an intense first-half battle that ended with both teams knotted up 30 after the first 20 minutes of play.
The Red & Gray continued to fight back and got as close as 12 in the fourth, but the run to start the half proved to be too much for them to overcome.
Three Colonels finished in double figures, with sophomore guard
Amelia Sandie leading the way with 17 points while hitting six of 12 field goals, two of three from behind the arc, and three of four from the charity stripe.
Stuffing the stat sheet was current Southland Conference Player of the Week junior guard
Kyla Hamilton who finished the contest with 16 points, six boards, and seven assists. She was 6-10 from the field and 4-7 from long range.
Freshman forward
Lexi Alexander poured in 12 points, hitting five of her nine shots, and snagging eight boards. Sophomore forward
Deonna Brister finished with seven points and six rebounds.
