Women’s Hoops Set for Home Opener

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team opens the 2022-23 season with a home game against the University of Mobile Rams on Thursday, November 10, at 11:30 a.m. inside Stopher Gym.

NICHOLLS COURT:
The Red & Gray welcome back seven players, including sophomore starters guard Amelia Sandie and forward Deonna Brister for head coach DoBee Plaisance's 15th season at Nicholls. The Colonels welcome two new transfers to the fold. Kyla Hamilton is a junior guard that is transferring from Southland foe McNeese, while Khia Lee is a forward transfer from Colorado Northwestern.

In 22 starts for the Colonels last season, Brister averaged 4.6, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. In 20 starts, Sandie averaged 2.4 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. Senior guard Traya Bruce played and started nine games last season and averaged 6 points, 1.4 assists, 1.3 rebounds, and nearly one steal a game. She had double-figure scoring outings against LSU (10), Spring Hill (11), and Louisiana Tech (11).

In 29 starts and 78 total games for McNeese, Hamilton averaged 6.8 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.9 rebounds in just under 21 minutes a game. Her best season was the 2020-21 campaign where she started 20 games, averaging 10.5 points, 3.1 assists, and 4.4 rebounds in 31 minutes per contest. In 18 starts and 21 overall games at Colorado NW, Lee averaged 4.4 points and 5.6 rebounds in 26 minutes per game.

MOBILE COURT (2-4):
Mobile is coming off a 58-54 loss at Dillard on Monday night. Sophomore forward Erica Jones leads the team averaging 13.2 points and 8.8 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Claire Worth averages 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds, while junior guard Mary Denman Luker and sophomore guard MacKenzie White add 7.8 and 7.3 points per game.

Defensively, the Rams are led by graduate student Cosette Balmy who averages 2.5 steals a game. White and Worth average 1.5 and 1 takeaway per contest. As a unit, the Rams have the 37th-best opponent's three-point percentage in the NAIA, allowing teams to shoot just 21.3% from deep.
