Men's Hoops Takes on Rust College Sunday

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University men's basketball team will look to improve to 3-0 at home this season as the Colonels take on Rust College on Sunday, Dec. 11. Tipoff on Broussard Court at Stopher Gymnasium is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Nicholls (3-5) has won its two previous home matchups against non-D1 Jarvis Christian and Champion Christian by an average of 55 points. Following Sunday's game against Rust College, the Colonels will host Southeastern on Thursday, Dec. 15 for the Southland Conference opener. Both games will air on ESPN+.

Nicholls (3-5) is coming off a heartbreaking loss at Texas Tech on Wednesday, falling to the Red Raiders 78-71. The Colonels led for the majority of the night before Tech rallied late for the victory. It marked the third time in the last year that the Red and Gray held a double-digit advantage in the second half against a Power 5 opponent. Last season, Nicholls was unable to hold onto leads at TCU and Wisconsin.

Despite the setback, the Colonels had two outstanding performances on the offensive end by Caleb Huffman and Latrell Jones. Huffman scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half but left the game with five minutes remaining after fouling out. Jones drained four 3-pointers for the second time in the last three games and bumped his team-best scoring average to 15.8 points per game.

Rust College competes at the NAIA level and is 3-8 on the season. One of the losses came before Thanksgiving against Jarvis Christian in a 77-69 decision. Nicholls hosted Jarvis for its home opener and picked up a 97-52 victory.
