Islanders stave off comeback to down Colonels, 64-60

THIBODAUX, La. - Trailing by double figures for most of the second half, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team climbed back late to come within three points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before falling 64-60 Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.

A four-point first quarter put Nicholls (4-15, 2-6 SLC) in a hole early and they fell behind by as much as 14 in the fourth before putting together a late push. Chelsea Cain scored three straight field goals for the Colonels to make it a one-possession game at 61-58 with less than a minute remaining. After a defensive stop, Nicholls turned the ball over on the inbounds and was forced to foul. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi sank two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to end the threat and hand the Colonels a sixth-straight home loss.

Chyna Allen scored 20 points to lead a trio of Colonels in double figures. Bryanna Washington posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Cain added 12 points and four assists.

Nicholls shot 44 percent for the game but was hampered by turnovers in the first half. The Colonels totaled 27 in the loss with 20 coming before halftime. The Islanders finished with a 26-14 advantage in points off turnovers.

Violeta Verano scored 17 points for the Islanders (15-7, 7-1 SLC) and added five assists. AMCC shot 37 percent for the game but was nearly perfect at the free throw line, making 13 of 14.

The Colonels were able to overcome the slow start with a 20-point second quarter. Allen poured in 14 in the period to make it a 30-24 game at the half.

But the Islanders opened the third with a 9-2 run to push the lead back to double figures. They matched their largest advantage early in the fourth quarter on a Makinna Serrata 3-pointer. She finished with 14 points and had five of the Islanders' 16 steals.
