TROY, Ala. - Alexa Poche' broke a 2-2 tie with a 2-run homer in the fifth, sparking a game-ending eight-run frame as the Nicholls State University softball team closed out the Troy Invitational with a 10-2 run-rule victory over Eastern Kentucky Sunday at the Troy Softball Complex.
Nicholls (2-8) batted around in the fifth with Poche' giving Nicholls a walk-off win with its fifth RBI single of the inning. The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak.
The Red and Gray piled up 13 hits with
Melise Gossen and
Lulu Vazquez finishing with three each. Poche' led with three RBIs while Gossen and
Shelby Devine had two each.
In the circle,
Brittney Turner threw a complete game to improve to 2-4 on the season. She allowed four hits and two earned runs -- both coming in the second inning.
Nicholls got one back in the bottom half on a Devine RBI base hit. Vazquez scored on the play after reaching on her first of two doubles in the game.
After tying the score at 2-2 with an unearned run in the third, the Nicholls' bats caught fire in the fifth with eight total hits. Poche' started it off with her home run then Vazquez followed with another double.
Samantha Gwiazda singled, setting up another run-scoring hit by Devine. The Colonels then had three consecutive RBI singles by
Kennedy Hebert, Gossen, and
Maya Zavala before EKU made its second pitching change of the inning. Facing a full count, Poche' fouled off three pitches before ending the game with a single to left.
UP NEXT
The Colonels will head to Youngsville, Louisiana next weekend for five games in the Mardi Gras Mambo. Nicholls kicks off the tournament Friday against Alabama (2 p.m.) and Lipscomb (4 p.m.).
