MOBILE, Ala. - Despite a solid outing in the circle by
Brittney Turner, the Nicholls State University softball team could not get its bats going against South Alabama as the Colonels were shutout, 3-0, Wednesday evening at Jaguar Field.
Nicholls (8-17) had four hits in the loss and struck out nine times against Jenny Hardy. All four hits came in the first three innings before Hardy retired 13 straight to close out her complete game.
Brittney Turner lasted 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and struck out four. South Alabama used a pair of extra-base hits in the second and third innings to go up 2-0. Stephanie Gonzalez homered in the second inning and Gabby Stagner drove in the second with an RBI double in the third. The final run scored in the sixth on an error.
Danielle Duplay led the game off with a single for the Colonels, but the inning was ended with three strikeouts. In the second,
Kennedy Hebert had a two-out double but was left on base after the fourth Colonel strikeout.
In the third,
Melise Gossen and
Alexa Poche' each singled with two outs. However, a fielder's choice ended the inning and Hardy would not allow a runner for the rest of the game.
ON DECK
Following a weekend off, Nicholls will head to Baton Rouge for a matchup against LSU on Tuesday, March 22. First pitch at Tiger Park is scheduled for 6 p.m.
