THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team looked on its way to ending its losing streak with a victory on Senior Day, but New Orleans erased an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter with a 12-0 run and went on to defeat the Colonels, 72-67, Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.
With the loss, Nicholls (4-21, 2-12 SLC) ended the regular season on an eight-game skid and will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament. New Orleans (4-17, 3-11 SLC) claimed the No. 7 seed after earning a split in the season series against the Colonels.
Senior
Chyna Allen scored 16 in her Stopher Gym finale while classmate
Lauryn Bowie chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Bryanna Washington added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Nicholls had one of its better offensive showings of the season by shooting 44 percent from the field, helped by a blazing 62 percent in the first quarter. However, the Privateers also could not miss in the opening period and led 24-21 after the first.
The Colonels used a 7-0 run before the break to grab a 36-32 lead. Washington had the last five points, capping it with a basket-and-one.
In the third, the Red and Gray never trailed but UNO was able to tie the score three times. The last came at the two-minute mark before the Colonels closed out the quarter on another 7-0 run.
Suiting up with just seven players, fatigue may have set in as the visitors outscored Nicholls 25-13 in the fourth. The Colonels led 57-49 with less than seven minutes to go after a Bowie 3-pointer, but UNO took control of the rest of the game. The 12-0 run gave the Privateers the lead and after Allen scored an and-one with two minutes remaining to trim the deficit to four, New Orleans sealed the win with a Dearica Pryor 3-pointer.
Pryor was one of three UNO players to score in double figures. She and Tomyree Thompson had 14 points while Jomyra Mathis scored a game-high 18.
