MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Nicholls State University softball team was three outs away from a four-win weekend, but North Alabama pieced together a four-run rally to pick up a 6-5 walk-off victory Sunday morning to conclude the Black & Gold Tournament.
Nicholls (7-13) broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with three runs, getting back-to-back run-scoring doubles by
Alexa Poche' and
Samantha Gwiazda before
Syndee Shelton singled in another. But the three-run lead wasn't enough.
North Alabama (18-3) got their first run in the seventh after
Paris Lehman (3-5) issued a walk with the bases loaded.
Brittney Turner took over in the circle and allowed an RBI single. With the bags still full and one out, Turner hit a batter for the game-tying run. Emma Broadfoot then ended the game on a base hit to left field.
Nicholls outhit the Lions, 8-6, led by
Melise Gossen and Poche' with two each. Poche' homered in the first before UNA followed with a 2-run double in the bottom half.Â
Lehman was charged with five earned runs on four hits in 6.1 innings.Â
