Colonel Softball drops two on Bevo Classic opening day

AUSTIN, Texas - The Nicholls State University softball team was defeated via run-rule in both of its games Friday in the Bevo Classic, falling 19-1 in five inning against Drake before a 17-9 setback at Red & Charline McCombs Field.

Game 1 -- Drake 19, Nicholls 1 (5 innings)

Drake took command with a six-run second before doubling the output with 12 runs in the third en route to a 19-1 victory in the opening game of the Bevo Classic.

Nicholls was held to two hits, getting one each by Melise Gossen and Bree Aguillard. Gossen also had the lone RBI after a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the second.

The Bulldogs finished with 16 hits. Paris Lehman took the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. 

Game 2 -- Minnesota 17, Nicholls 9 (6 innings)

The Colonels fell behind by five runs in the first inning before responding with six in the second, but Minnesota pounded out 18 hits to hand Nicholls a 17-9 loss in six inning to conclude the opening day of the Bevo Classic.

Nicholls had four of its nine hits for the game in the second inning, ending the frame with a 2-run double by Melise Gossen and a 2-run single by Julia Cramer for a 6-5 lead. The Gophers regained the lead in the the bottom half before the Colonels tied it back up in the third at 7-7 on a Syndee Shelton single.

Minnesota answered with five runs in the third and then scored the final five runs of the game to secure the walk-off win in the sixth.

Lulu Vazquez, Shelton, and Jaida Choice each had two hits for the Colonels. Four players finished with two RBIs each as Maya Zavala and Shelton also drove in a pair. Shelton's second RBI came in the fifth as did Zavala's second bases-loaded walk that cut the deficit to 12-9. 

Turner was charged with 12 earned runs on 12 hits in 2.2 innings. Paris Lehman tossed three innings, allowing three earned on six hits.
