Colonel Tennis sweeps regular season finale at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. - The Nicholls State University women's and men's tennis teams finished their regular season with a pair of road victories against Jackson State, with the women edging the Lady Tigers, 4-3, while the men picked up a 4-0 shutout.

The Colonel women's team (12-10) had to earn four victories in singles to come out on top after dropping the doubles point. Simona Maksimovic won via retirement on the top court and Laura Lopez followed with a straight-set victory at No. 5. Jackson State (15-6) won lines 4 and 3 to pull within a point of clinching before the Colonels won the final two in three sets.

Constanza Cruz tied the match with a win at No. 6, taking the match 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. At No. 2, Jessie Mount battled back from a 6-1 loss in the opening set for a dominating 6-0 win in the second against Paula Arcarons. The two played to a tiebreaker in the third and with Mount trailing 6-2, she rallied back for a 10-8 victory to give the Colonels the win.

In doubles play, Cruz and Carla Bouygues won at No. 2, 6-4 while Morgan Forshag and Sara Sophia Safarova fell at No. 3. Mount was also part of a tiebreaker in doubles as she and Lopez were edged at No. 1, 7-6 (7-4).

On the men's side, the Colonels needed to win just one of the doubles matches as JSU (8-7) was short-handed, resulting in a default victory at 3. Nicola Wehrle and Piyush Surendra Salekar secured the point with a 6-1 victory on Line 1.

JSU defaulted the No. 6 court in singles to put Nicholls ahead, 2-0. Wehrle made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph at No. 5 and Antonio Sasso closed it out with 6-3, 6-1 victory at 4.
