Colonel Men's Tennis falls to top-seed Islanders

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Nicholls State University men's tennis team struck first against No. 1 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by winning the doubles point, but the Islanders cruised in singles play as the Colonels dropped a 4-1 match in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament Saturday at the University Tennis Center.

In doubles, the Islanders (14-9) took the No. 2 court before Omar Morsy and Antonio Sasso tied it up with a 6-4 win at No. 3. The point came down to a battle at No. 1 with Nicola Wehrle and Piyush Surendra Salekar edging the Islander duo of Pascal Lorieul / Nathan Schwartz for the 1-0 lead.

In singles, AMCC dominated play early by allowing two or fewer points in the opening sets in five of the six matches. Lorieul rebounded for A&M-Corpus Christi after his doubles loss to secure a win at No. 1 singles on a pair of 6-1 margins against Morsy. Ulysse Bertrand gave the Islanders lead with a win at No. 5 singles versus Sasso, and Kyohei Yamanaka made it 3-1 with a victory against Pavle Drobnjakovic. Nathan Schwartz provided the exclamation point for the Islanders in straight 6-1 sets on court two against Salekar.

Antoine Martin-Thiriat and Wehrle held leads in their second sets for the Colonels before play was suspended.

Nicholls wrapped up the season with a 11-10 overall record which included its first postseason victory since 2012.
