HAMMOND, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team suffered a run-rule loss in its opening game of the Southland Conference Tournament, falling 10-2 in five innings to No. 2 Southeastern on Tuesday evening at North Oak Park.
Nicholls (12-37) had three hits in the defeat while Southeastern cranked out 10 and had help from three Colonel errors. The Lady Lions were held scoreless in the opening frame but went on to score in each of the next four innings to earn the run-rule walkoff victory.
With the loss, the No. 7 Colonels will take on No. 3 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in an elimination game, set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Kennedy Hebert had two of the Colonels' three hits and drove in a run to avoid the run-rule in the top of the fifth, making the score 9-2. But SLU still went on to end the game in the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Lindsey Rizzo.
Hebert also had a run-scoring single in the third that made it a 2-1 game. Her blooper dropped in between a trio of Lady Lions in right center and she then beat out a rundown, which allowed
Melise Gossen to slide home safely.
Paris Lehman took the loss with two earned runs in 2.0 innings. Both SLU runs scored in the second was a result of one of the Colonel errors.
Brittney Turner allowed five runs on five hits in 1.2 innings while
Taryn Westbrook struck out one in an inning.
Heather Zumo struck out four Colonels in 4.0 innings of work and allowed two hits.
Lulu Vazquez had the other single for the Colonels in the second.
SLU was led on offense by Maddie Watson (3 RBI) and Blaire Bizette (2 RBI).
