THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team was limited to a pair of infield singles, including one by Senior Day honoree
Bree Aguillard, as McNeese picked up a sweep with a 3-0 win over the Colonels Saturday afternoon at Swanner Field.
Nicholls wrapped up the regular season with a 12-36 overall record and 4-14 in the Southland. With the loss, the Colonels will be the No. 7 seed in next week's SLC Tournament and are set to take on host No. 2 Southeastern on Tuesday. The win gave McNeese (35-19, 15-3 SLC) the outright regular season championship, finishing a game ahead of SLU.Â
Freshman
Paris Lehman had a solid showing by keeping the Cowgirls off the scoreboard until the fifth inning. A walk and a hit-by-pitch led to a McNeese run before Kaylee Lopez singled with the bases loaded for a 3-0 McNeese advantage.
The three runs were more than enough for Ashley Vallejo (16-7). She allowed only three Colonels to reach base and faced the minimum in all but one inning.
Julia Kramer and Aguillard recorded infield singles in the third but Nicholls was kept off the board. Then in the fifth after hitting
Lulu Vazquez with one out, Vallejo caught a hard liner and tossed to first for a double play.Â
Lehman allowed three earned on five hits in 4.2 innings.
Brittney Turner pitched the rest of the game, giving up a lone hit.
Lopez paced McNeese with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate.Â
