THIBODAUX, La. -- The Nicholls State University volleyball team (4-11, 1-2 SLC) was defeated by UNO (8-7, 2-1 SLC) in an action-packed five-set match.
The first two sets were back-and-forth affairs that saw the Colonels use late scoring runs to pull away from the Privateers by the scores of 25-18 and 25-16. The third and fourth sets were the exact opposite with UNO using late runs to pull away from Nicholls by the scores of 25-21 and 25-19 to force a fifth set. In the fifth do-or-die set, the Colonels held multiple-point leads twice before the Privateers used a late rally to win the set 15-13.
Overall, the Colonels had three individuals score double-digit kills. Freshman outside hitter
Mackenzie Pryor led the offensive charge tallying 13 kills, while senior outside hitters
Devon Bright and
Katie Jones followed with 11 kills apiece. The Red & Gray attack was paced nicely by setters senior
Lilly Bivens and freshman
Taylor Heeb who finished the contest with 24 and 19 assists, respectively.
Sophomore outside hitter
Trinity Vinzant had an all-around performance recording seven kills, and three aces, along with 15 digs, four block assists, and one solo block to bring her point total to 13. Also recording double-digit points was senior middle blocker
S'mara Riley, who registered seven block assists, four kills, three solo blocks, and two service aces to finish the match with 12.5 points.
Defensively, Sophomore libero
Kadie Becnel and Pryor each had 18 digs, while Bivens added 11 and Heeb and Jones combined for 10. The Colonel's height was overwhelming at times for the Privateers with Nicholls accumulating a total of 26 block assists including six from freshman middle blocker
Paris Dixon and five from Bright.
UP NEXT
The Colonels will play their first home SLC contest on Thursday, Sept. 29 in the "Stuff Stopher" themed match against McNeese.
