THIBODAUX, La. - Jemma Catherwood scored in the 85th minute against Jackson State as the Nicholls State University women's soccer program ended a lengthy winless drought with a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
Led by second-year head coach
Robert Podeyn, the Colonels secured their first win since 2019 to end a stretch of 51 games without a victory. Although Nicholls (1-4-1) showed improvement in Podeyn's inaugural campaign in the fall of 2021 and had one tie this season, the win over Jackson State (1-5) is his first as a Colonel.
After earning a draw in their three-match Hawai'i/California trip, Nicholls looked to be headed for another on Sunday as the teams were scoreless for 84 minutes. But
Kori Ingram placed a perfect cross off of a free kick to set up the game-winner. Catherwood beat the defender and went far post with her left foot, scoring the Colonels' third goal of the season and the first of her career.
The Colonel defense was able to limit the Tigers to one off-target shot the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Reagan Carter had five saves at goalkeeper as JSU totaled 13 shots. It marked the second shutout of her career after she saw all 110 minutes in the Colonels' 0-0 draw against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the spring of '21.
Nicholls finished with seven total shots but were efficient as six were on goal. After scoring in the last match against UC Irvine,
Rami Mitchell accounted for two shots on goal.
