Colonel Soccer Set to 'Storm The Stadium' Friday for Southland Opener

THIBODAUX, La. - Looking to carry the momentum from last weekend's victory, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team will welcome rival McNeese to the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Friday, Sept. 9 for the Southland Conference opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The match will serve as the program's 'Storm The Stadium' promotion. Students in attendance will have the opportunity to win prizes.

Nicholls (1-4-1) defeated Jackson State on Sunday, 1-0, for its first win since the 2019 season. The Colonels will now set their sights on a Southland victory with the last coming in a 2-0 blanking of former league member Stephen F. Austin in '18.

Last Sunday, freshman Jemma Catherwood scored in the 85th minute against the Tigers to lift the Red and Gray to the victory. After going scoreless in their two matches in Hawai'i, Nicholls has scored in consecutive matches for the first time since October of 2018. The offense has produced three goals this season with Karina Gonzalez and Rami Mitchell each scoring the first of their careers. Gonzalez scored in the opener against Southern for the first goal in the brand new Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex, while Mitchell's goal tied the match at 1-1 at UC Irvine.

Goalkeeper Reagan Carter also tallied the second shutout of her career, racking up five saves against Jackson State. Her other clean sheet was in a 0-0 extra time draw against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

McNeese (3-2) comes to Thibodaux after defeating Southern, 2-1, last Wednesday. The Lady Jaguars are the lone common opponent so far for the Cowgirls and Colonels as Southern picked up a 2-1 win in the opener.

The Cowgirls have four goals on the season with Salma Elhaimer accounting for two. She scored the first for McNeese in the 2-1 win over Southern.

McNeese has won the last nine meetings against the Colonels, capped by three victories last season. The Cowgirls won both regular season meetings, 2-0, and then won by the same score in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
