THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University tennis program made its debut at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Saturday, but North Alabama outlasted the Colonels in a pair of 5-2 victories.
The men (0-1) started the day off against North Alabama (1-1) and dropped the doubles point. The Lions claimed courts 2 and 3 for the point, despite
Ricardo Machado and
Antonio Sasso pairing up for a Colonel win at No. 1.
In singles play,
Omar Morsy won in three sets on the top court while
Quentin Lamothe had an impressive showing in a 6-2, 6-3 win in his debut. Although Nicholls took a three-setter thanks to Morsy, UNA used a straight-set victory at 6 before edging the Colonels in three three-set matches on 2, 3, and 4 for the team victory.
In the women's match, Nicholls (0-1) produced the same overall result -- falling in doubles and taking two of the singles matches -- but the two victories came at the 5 and 6 lines in singles.
Carla Bouygues earned a shutout at No. 6 while
Laura Lopez picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory at 5.
Two of the Lions' four singles triumphs were in three sets.
