COMMERCE, Texas - Facing a 17-point deficit in the second half, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team rallied back against Texas A&M-Commerce to pick up a 66-63 victory Thursday night at The Field House.
Nicholls (7-7, 2-0 SLC) fell behind by double figures early in the contest and it wasn't until
Caleb Huffman drained a 3-pointer with a minute remaining that gave the Colonels their first tie since it was 2-2. Following a Lion turnover,
Latrell Jones sank a 3-pointer for the Red and Gray's first lead of the night at 66-63 with only 30 seconds to go.
The defense came through again with another turnover but the Colonels misfired on a pair of free throws. However, a last-second 3-pointer by Tommie Lewis hit off the iron as Nicholls escaped with the victory.Â
Huffman poured in a game-high 21 points on 9 of 16 from the field and was a rebound shy of a double-double. He was 2 of 3 from behind the arc with both 3-pointers coming in key situations. In addition to his game-tying bucket, Huffman's first triple came right after Texas A&M-Commerce (3-11, 1-1 SLC) grabbed its largest lead at 50-33 early in the second half.Â
Jones and
Pierce Spencer also had clutch 3-pointers to help spark the comeback. Jones ended his night with 13 points while Spencer had a season-high 12 points.
Nicholls trailed 40-31 at halftime after a rough 20 minutes. The Lions shot 58 percent in the half and connected on 6 of 14 from 3-point range. But the Colonel defense stepped up after the intermission, holding AMC to 32 percent and 3 of 12 from behind the arc. Nicholls also limited the Lion offense to just 13 points in the final 15 minutes.
Tyrease Terrell chipped in on the defensive end down the stretch, logging 12 of his 15 minutes in the second half. All three of his assists resulted in a 3-pointer, including the game-winner to Jones. Also on defense, Huffman finished with two steals to up his season total to a Southland best 32.Â
Demarcus Demonia led the Lions with 19 points while Lewis finished with 14.
