Colonels fall at A&M-Commerce to start road swing

COMMERCE, Texas - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team had a strong start in its first road Southland Conference game, but the Colonel offense stalled after the first quarter as Nicholls fell 81-48 at Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday evening at The Field House. 

Nicholls (3-10, 0-2 SLC) trailed 19-17 through the first quarter before Texas A&M-Commerce used an 8-0 run to push the advantage to double figures midway through the second. After going into the break with a 41-24 lead, the Lions (6-5, 2-0 SLC) scored 14 straight points to open the half. AMC led by as much as 35 en route to a victory in the first ever meeting between the schools.

Lexi Alexander led the offense with 18 points while Deonna Brister and Madison Gill chipped in with eight points each. Alexander recorded the third double-double of her rookie campaign, totaling 12 rebounds to go along with two blocks and two assists.

Nicholls shot 53 percent in the opening quarter but finished at 35 percent for the game. The Colonels also had 20 turnovers which contributed to a 19-5 disadvantage in fastbreak points.

The Lions finished at 43 percent for the game and had four players score in double figures. Laila Lawrence matched Alexander's game-high 18 points.
