THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer team drew with Northwestern State 2-2 in the final game of the season inside the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Friday night.
Despite being outshot 24-6, the Colonels secured their first draw in SLC play since 2021 (0-0 vs Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) and scored the most goals in a league match since the 2019 finale against Southeastern (2-5).
The scoring began 15 minutes into the contest when junior midfielder
Lauren Andre broke free and scored with a shot off the left post to put the Colonels up 1-0. The Red & Gray held that lead for more than 50 minutes.
In the 68th minute, the Lady Demons' Emily Senatore scored off a pass from Riley Stern to knot the match at 1.
Less than two minutes later, the Colonels created their lone corner kick of the second stanza.
Junior defender
Delaney LaMotte sent the ball to the near post where Andre headed the ball towards the back post and found senior forward
Koryn Barrett for the goal to put the Red & Gray up 2-1.
The Colonels held the advantage for less than a minute (70:12-70:37).
Senatore scored again, this time off a long through ball by Taylor Spitzer that allowed her to create separation between her and the defense and put the ball in the back of the net.
In her ninth start of the season, sophomore goalkeeper
Elizabeth Zepeda allowed her fewest goals while facing her second most shots of the season (24). She posted nine saves in the first half en route to her fourth double figure save match of the year (12).
The physical contest saw 18 total fouls and five yellow cards.
Before the match, the Red & Gray honored senior forward
Kaitlyn Poirrier and senior midfielder
Caryn Bonadona for their careers and accomplishments as Colonels.
