FRISCO, Texas – The Nicholls State University football team had two members garner Southland Player of the Week for the second consecutive Monday as running back
Collin Guggenheim and safety
Tyler Morton were named the league's offensive and defensive players of the week.
The honor is the first honor for the offense this season and second career SLC weekly recognition for Guggenheim. Morton repeated as defensive POW after earning it for the first time last week.
A native of Kenner, Louisiana, Guggenheim rushed for four touchdowns in the 38-7 win over HCU, tying the program's single-game record. He gave Nicholls the lead for good with a rushing TD in the second quarter before finding the end zone three times in the third. He did not play in the fourth quarter as Nicholls held a 31-point lead over the Huskies in their first home contest since August. Guggenheim finished with 64 yards rushing on 16 carries, moving into the Top 10 of the Colonels' all-time rushing yards list.
Morton, a native of St. Rose, Louisiana, turned in his second straight two-turnover effort, recording a pair of interceptions in the first half in the win over HCU. His first pick came on the opening possession and led to a short TD drive. He then followed with an interception just before halftime, returning it 29 yards. Morton totaled six tackles and a breakup to go along with his two interceptions. The Colonel defense limited HCU to 220 total yards and just 46 rushing after the Huskies averaged 228.0 on the ground in their first two league games.
In addition to his SLC honor, Morton repeated as FedEx Ground National FCS Defensive Player of the Week honorable mention.
