FRISCO, Texas - Nicholls State University running back
Collin Guggenheim was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week while safety
Devonte' Mathews garnered the honor for defense as the league office announced Monday morning its weekly awards.
The honor is the second this season for Guggenheim and first for Mathews.
Guggenheim rushed for 153 yards and four touchdowns in the victory at No. 8/4 UIW. It marked the second time this season that the Kenner, Louisiana native has scored four rushing TDs, tying the school record. He had his normal goal line TDs of 5, 6, and 3 yards and also broke free up the middle for a season-long 43-yard touchdown. Paired with running back
Jaylon Spears (160 yards rushing), Nicholls racked up over 300 yards rushing against the league's top-ranked defense.
Guggenheim leads the Southland in rushing yards per game (79.0) and rushing touchdowns (11). The performance in San Antonio was his eighth career 100-yard game and second of the season.
Mathews scored a touchdown and had the game-ending interception in the Colonels' win over the Cardinals, snapping their 15-game home winning streak. With Nicholls leading 24-13 in the third, UIW moved into Colonel territory before fumbling on a rush, and Mathews scooped it up and ran 58 yards for a touchdown. Then with UIW looking to rally in the final minutes, Mathews picked off Zach Calzada to seal the Colonels' win in the battle of the unbeatens. Mathews finished with three tackles and a breakup to go along with his two turnovers.
Mathews is the third Colonel to be named Southland Defensive Player of the Week this season, joining two-time winner
Tyler Morton.
