Lindenwood rallies in ninth to even series

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University baseball team allowed two runs in the ninth as Lindenwood rallied for a 3-2 victory Saturday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Didier Field.

Leading 2-1, Josh Mancuso struck out the first two batters in the ninth before an error kept the inning alive. The Lions then tied the game after back-to-back singles, making it 2-2 on a base hit by Logan Stevens. Cade Evans entered the game to try to keep the score tied, but Tyson Ludwig beat out an infield single that plated the go-ahead run.

In the ninth, Nicholls looked to be in great position by putting the first two runners on after a walk and hit-by-pitch. But two shallow flyouts kept the runners on first and second, then a lineout ended the game.

Despite the loss, Devin Desandro turned in an outstanding performance in his start on the mound. He lasted six innings and struck out eight batters, allowing just a lone single in the fifth. Mancuso struck out five batters in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Colonels scored the first run of the game in the fifth, taking advantage of a leadoff error. After Basiel Williams walked, Parker Coddou made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Linedenwood used a Colonel error in the seventh to tie the game. Following the miscue and a single, Joe Copeland found space up the middle for an RBI single.

Nicholls retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth, helped by a leadoff double by Edgar Alvarez. Xane Washington moved him over on a flyout before Wes Toups smacked an RBI single to center for the short-lived 2-1 lead.
