YOUNGSVILLE, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team picked up a sweep on Saturday, defeating Florida A&M in five innings, 12-2, before knocking off Toledo, 5-2, in Day 2 of the Mardi Gras Mambo at the Youngsville Sports Complex.
GAME 1 - Nicholls 12, Florida A&M 2 (5 inn.)
Nicholls used to big innings to earn a run-rule victory over Florida A&M.
The Colonels exploded for five runs in the second inning and added another in the third. Leading 6-2 in the fifth, the offense pushed six runs across the plate to put the run-rule into play.
Brittney Turner allowed just a bunt single in the bottom half to finish the complete game.
Nicholls finished with nine hits, getting two each from
Tal Evans and
Melise Gossen. Five Colonels turned in multi-RBI efforts, led by
Claire Sisco with three.
Turner threw 5.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits. She totaled three strikeouts and walked none.
Abby Andersen started things off in the second inning with a 2-run double. Sisco followed with a 2-run single and the final run of the frame scored on an error.
FAMU scored on sacrifice flies in the second and fourth innings, and Nicholls added another run via an error in the third.
The big fifth inning was started on an RBI fielder's choice by Sisco.
Erin Krause and
Tal Evans added RBI singles and Gossen drove in two on a double to center.
GAME 2 - Nicholls 5, Toledo 2
Audrey McNeill put together a strong outing in the circle while the offense gradually built a 4-0 lead en route to a 5-2 victory over Toledo.
McNeill struck out two and allowed a lone earned run in the win. She kept the Rockets off the scoreboard through five innings before they scored one in the sixth and seventh frames.
The Colonels outhit Toledo, 8-6, and their first was a solo homer by Gossen in the second inning. In the third, Nicholls pushed its advantage to 3-0 on a pair of sacrifices.
In the fifth,
Alexa Poche' drove in a run on a groundout for a 4-0 lead. Toledo scored in the sixth and a leadoff error helped spark a rally in the seventh. The Rockets loaded the bases with just one out but could only plate a run to make the final.
Gossen led the offense with a 3 for 4 outing, and Sisco added two hits with one being a double and two runs scored.
