Colonel Softball sweeps Wednesday doubleheader against Alcorn

THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University softball team extended its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep at home against Alcorn, winning both games via run-rule, 9-0 and 12-1, Wednesday evening on Swanner Field at GeoSurfaces Park.

Nicholls (7-4) outhit Alcorn in the two games, 23-5, for its first and second wins at home. The Colonels had just one victory in 10 home contests last season.

GAME 1 - Nicholls 9, Alcorn 0 (5 inn.)
The Colonel pitching staff combined to allow a lone single and struck out eight as the Colonels took the opener, 9-0, in five innings.

Nicholls scored all of its runs in the first three innings, including a 2-run home run by Erin Krause in the opening frame. Melise Gossen capped a four-run second with a 3-run towering shot to dead center.

In the third, Abby Anderson tripled in a run after Brynne Songy had an RBI groundout. The final Colonel run was thanks to an RBI single by Carmella Muccilli.

Audrey McNeill earned the win, tossing three shutout innings. She gave up a two-out single in the third but the runner was thrown out trying to steal by Songy. Molly VandenBout and Jensen Gremillion also threw one frame each.

VandenBout led the offense with a 3-for-3 day at the plate and Gossen was 2-for-2.

GAME 2 - Nicholls 12, Alcorn 1 (5 inn.)
The Colonels scored in each of the four innings, highlighted by an eight-run second, for their second consecutive five-inning victory.

Nicholls totaled 13 hits and a total of 12 players recorded one. Andersen was the lone Colonel with multi hits, finishing 2 for 2 with two runs scored. Only one hit was for extra bases -- a solo home run by Mckenzie Champagne

Molly Yoo picked up the victory in the circle after a rocky start. Kiri Edwards led off the game for Alcorn with a base hit and scored on a Genise Wells double in the next at-bat. But Yoo settled in and did not allow another hit in her three innings.

The big second inning for the Colonels all came with two outs. Nicholls produced six consecutive base hits, including a 2-run single by Claire Sisco.

Champagne led off the third with her solo shot and pinch-hitter Syndee Shelton followed with an RBI single in the fourth.

Brittney Turner worked a perfect fourth inning and Kalyn DeHart pitched the fifth. After striking out the first two batters, DeHart gave up two hits and a walk before Brianna McFaddin made a diving catch in left field to end the game.
