HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Nicholls State University softball team saw its winning streak stopped at seven games with a 5-3 loss against Yale but bounced back with a consecutive run-rule victory over Arkansas Pine-Bluff in the Hub City Challenge at Southern Miss.
Nicholls (10-5) will wrap up the weekend against the host Golden Eagles on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
GAME 1 - Yale 5, Nicholls 3
A four-run second inning for Yale proved to be just enough for a Bulldog 5-3 victory.
Melise Gossen continued her stellar senior campaign with a 2-run home run in the first inning that gave Nicholls a 2-1 lead. But Yale used two big hits in the top of the second, a bases clearing triple by Carolyn Skotz followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of Libby Peoples for a 4-2 advantage.
In the fifth, Nicholls inched closer with an RBI single by
Claire Sisco. The run was set up thanks to a leadoff
Tal Evans double.Â
The Colonels made a late rally in the seventh, putting two on with two outs, but a groundout ended the game.
Averi Paden took the loss, allowing five earned runs in 1.1 innings of work. Both of her walked batters in the second came home to score in the decisive inning.
Molly Yoo pitched the rest of the game, surrendering a pair of hits while striking out five in 5.2 shutout innings.Â
Sisco led the Colonel offense with two hits.Â
GAME 2 - Nicholls 13, UAPB 2 (5 inn.)
Nicholls belted 15 hits and scored in each inning for its second run-rule win over Arkansas Pine-Bluff in as many days.
The Colonels scored 10 runs in the first three frames to put the run-rule into play, then added one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Brittney Turner allowed two runs in the third but nothing else in the complete game victory.
Eleven different Colonels had a hit in the win, getting two each by
Alexa Poche',
Syndee Shelton and
Brianna McFaddin. Shelton ended the scoring with a 2-run homer in the fifth, the second of her career.Â
Turner struck out four Lady Lions in 5.0 innings and allowed four singles.Â
