THIBODAUX, La. - Looking to close out the season with consecutive wins, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team could not hang on to a halftime lead against Lamar as the Colonels fell in their season finale, 70-56, Wednesday evening at Stopher Gymnasium.
With the loss, Nicholls ends its season with a 5-24 overall record and a 2-16 mark in the Southland. This season is the first time the Colonels have not reached the conference tournament since 2011.
Nicholls had three players score in double figures, led by 15 points by
Adrian Mann. After missing half of the season with an injury, Mann emerged as one of the team's leading scorers, reaching double figures in six of the final eight games.
Kyla Hamilton and
Lexi Alexander each added 12 points.
The Colonels made 8 of 21 from 3-point range with five coming in the first half. Nicholls was 5 of 8 from behind the arc to aid a 29-25 advantage at the break.
But Lamar dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Colonels 23-14 in the period. The Cardinals made 8 of 13 from the field for a 48-43 lead. Then in the fourth, an 10-0 Lamar run midway through the stanza put the game away.
Portia Adams and Akasha Davis each scored 21 for LU. Davis helped Lamar to a 45-29 advantage on the boards with 17 rebounds.
